Endocrinology
The endocrine system is a very complex, delicately balanced arrangement of hormonal feedback loops designed to coordinate many bodily functions and ensuring they work normally. The system uses many different hormones as ‘messenger’ signals. These are produced by a number of different endocrine glands including: the adrenal glands, sex glands, pancreas, parathyroid, pituitary gland and thyroid. The hormones produced by these glands are secreted directly into the blood stream and are then transported throughout the body for action on a wide range of target organs and systems. Why see an endocrinologist? Endocrinologists are physicians specializing in the treatment of hormonal disorders. These include disorders of the thyroid such as under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism), over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism), thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules, diabetes, hypoglycemia, pituitary tumors, menstrual irregularities, infertility, sexual dysfunction, hair loss, excessive hair growth, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, calcium disorders, adrenal disorders including adrenal tumors, osteoporosis, testosterone deficiency and many others. These disorders can be effectively treated under the care of an endocrinologist. If you feel that you have an endocrine system disorder, please contact our office today.
